Request an Italian death certificate
If you need documentation of a death recorded in the Italian Stato Civile — a certificate, extract or full copy — this page is the starting point. ItaloDocs is a private documentary assistance service: it is not part of the Italian public administration. We assess the case and, where possible, coordinate the request according to the details available and the competent Comune.

Certificato, estratto and copia integrale
These are ways of issuing the death record held in the Italian Stato Civile. They are not equivalent, and none is universally “better” or “more valid”. Not every Comune offers exactly the same forms through the same channels.
Certificato di morte
A document with the essential details of the death, in summary form.
Estratto per riassunto dell'atto di morte
It contains information taken from the record, in the form issued by the Comune. Some Comuni also issue a multilingual model where that applies.
Copia integrale dell'atto di morte
It reproduces in full the content of the registered act, including its components and annotations, when issue of that form is appropriate.
The right document depends on the purpose, the receiving body, the country where it will be used and the requirements of the procedure. Confirm with whoever will receive the file.
ANPR / ANSC and death records
Unlike certain digitised birth and marriage records, the current ANPR/ANSC citizen service does not list death records among the documents available through this new function. The request may therefore need to be handled at the competent Comune.
Official communications from the Ministry of the Interior, ANPR and DAIT on the service opened on 31 March 2026 cite birth, marriage and civil union formed digitally in ANSC. They do not list death. If the service is extended, we will update this information.
In the anagraphic-certificates section, ANPR also states that for types not listed — for example historical or death certificates — you should go to the Comune counter. That does not replace a Stato Civile death act.
Locating the record at the competent Comune
Documentation relating to the death is usually held in the Stato Civile registers of the Comune where the death occurred or was recorded. We do not promise that, with incomplete details, the record can always be located.
ItaloDocs assesses the case according to the details you have and the competent Comune. Where possible, we coordinate the request. Issue remains with the public office.
Requesting it from abroad
If you are outside Italy, you can consult ItaloDocs about obtaining the document without necessarily travelling to the Comune. Relatives who need documentation of a deceased family member and do not have direct access to the record are a common case.
It is common not to know the format, the Comune that holds the record, or whether the document will be used in a foreign procedure. Describe the procedure and the details you have: we assess the request and, where possible, explain how to proceed.

This type of document may be used, depending on the case, in successions, family procedures, administrative procedures, documentary files or applications to foreign authorities.

Apostille and use abroad
If the Italian document will be used in another country, it may need an apostille or legalisation depending on the destination country, the receiving authority, the type of document and the purpose. It is not always required.

We assess the case according to the type of document, the details available and the competent Comune. Issue belongs to the public office: we do not promise that every record can be obtained.
The certificato di morte summarises the essential details of the death. The estratto per riassunto takes information from the act, in the Comune’s form. The copia integrale reproduces the full content of the act, when issue of that form is appropriate. The receiving body decides the format. Not every Comune offers the same forms through the same channels.
