Italian citizenship recognition by descent (iure sanguinis)

From the late 19th century through much of the 20th century, millions of Italians emigrated to the Americas in search of new opportunities.

Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Uruguay, Canada and other countries welcomed large Italian communities that preserved their traditions, culture and family ties with Italy.

Today, many of their descendants can access recognition of Italian citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis) by proving uninterrupted transmission of citizenship through their family line.

Important: changes to Italian citizenship by descent

Italian legislation on iure sanguinis citizenship was amended in 2025 through new provisions that introduced limitations and new criteria for certain applications submitted from abroad.

As a result, not all descendants of Italian citizens can currently access citizenship recognition under the same conditions as before.

Applicable requirements may vary depending on the filing date, line of descent and the particular circumstances of each case.

For up-to-date information, we recommend consulting current legislation and requirements set by the competent Italian authorities.
