Request an Italian marriage certificate
If you need documentation of a marriage recorded in the Italian Stato Civile — a certificate, extract or full copy — this page is the starting point. ItaloDocs is a private documentary assistance service: it is not part of the Italian public administration. We assess the case and, where possible, coordinate the request according to the Comune and the type of document.

Certificato, estratto and copia integrale
These are three ways of issuing the marriage record held in the Italian Stato Civile. They are not equivalent, and none is universally “better” or “more valid”.
Certificato di matrimonio
A document with the essential details of the marriage, in summary form.
Estratto per riassunto dell'atto di matrimonio
It contains information taken from the record and may include annotations where they apply.
Copia integrale dell'atto di matrimonio
It reproduces in full the content of the registered act, including its components and annotations, when issue of that form is appropriate.
The right document depends on the purpose, the receiving body, the country where it will be used and the requirements of the procedure. Confirm with whoever will receive the file.

Certificato anagrafico di matrimonio ≠ estratto dell'atto di matrimonio
ANPR has long allowed anagraphic marriage certificates based on registry (Anagrafe) data. That does not make them the same as a civil-status certificate, a summary extract or a full copy of the marriage act.
They are not interchangeable. If an authority specifically asks for the estratto dell'atto di matrimonio (or the full copy), we do not claim that an anagraphic marriage certificate is automatically enough.
How it can be requested today
From 31 March 2026, the Ministry of the Interior’s ANPR portal offers a service for civil-status certificates and extracts relating to records formed digitally in ANSC. Under those conditions, certificates and extracts of birth, marriage and civil union may be available.
Direct access for the citizen requires a digital identity (SPID, CIE or CNS) and is subject to the service’s conditions. Official information states that they may be requested for yourself and for minor children belonging to the same anagraphic household.
Older marriages, records not present in ANSC, certain third-party requests and other situations may still require an application to the competent Comune. ANPR did not replace the Comuni, and not every Italian marriage is available on the portal.
ANPR / ANSC and applications to the Comune
ANPR is not limited to anagraphic certificates: it still issues those and, since 2026, also allows — when the act is in ANSC — civil-status certificates and extracts of marriage, birth and civil union.
On the portal, a civil-status certificate (if the act is digital) can be downloaded; an extract (summary or full copy) is requested from the Comune that formed the act and downloaded once the office verifies it. Not every historical record is digitised. Third parties cannot download every act.
ItaloDocs checks the request and assesses the case. We do not promise to obtain every record: issue remains with the competent public office.
If the marriage was celebrated outside Italy
If the marriage was celebrated outside Italy, the later possibility of obtaining Italian documentation depends on the act having been registered or transcribed in the relevant Italian Stato Civile registers.
We do not claim that every marriage celebrated abroad has already been transcribed. ItaloDocs can assess the documentary case, without replacing the Comune’s assessment or a full transcription guide.
Requesting it from abroad
If you are outside Italy, you can consult ItaloDocs about obtaining the document without necessarily travelling to the Comune in person. Relatives or descendants who need the documentation and do not have direct access to the record are a frequent case as well.
It is common not to know the format, the Comune that holds the record, or whether the marriage is in ANSC. Describe the procedure and the details you have: we assess the request and, where possible, explain how to proceed.
