Italian marriage certificate: certificato, estratto or copia integrale?
Certificate, summary extract, full copy and multilingual extract: how they differ and what to check before requesting an Italian marriage record.
August 31, 2026 · 15 min
You have been asked for an “Italian marriage certificate”. On Comune pages and on the ANPR portal you will nevertheless find different names: certificato di matrimonio, estratto per riassunto dell’atto di matrimonio, copia integrale dell’atto di matrimonio, estratto plurilingue. The question is the same as for a birth record: which one should I request?
They are not automatically the same document. In Italy the certificate, the summary extract and the full copy of a civil-status record have distinct contents and uses. Which marriage record you need depends on the purpose, the receiving body, the country where you will present it and the requirements of the procedure. This guide helps you tell them apart, without replacing the competent office.
Note
There is no “universal” marriage document for every file. Before you apply, confirm in writing which Italian name the receiving body uses. The notes on this page are a guide and rest on the sheets of the Italian Ministry of the Interior / ANPR.
What is the certificato di matrimonio
The certificato di matrimonio — in the wording of the National Registry, the civil-status certificate relating to the marriage — is a document issued by the municipality’s stato civile office (or, when the act is digital, through ANPR). It is meant to prove the place and date of the event, in summary form.
According to ANPR, online civil-status certificates are available only for records formed digitally through digital civil status (ANSC), covering birth, marriage and civil union. They do not automatically cover every historical record kept at the Comune, nor a marriage celebrated abroad and not yet transcribed in Italy.
ANPR also states that a civil-status certificate is for use with private parties who expressly ask for it, with the judicial authority, for organising a marriage, or for documents to be sent abroad. In dealings with the Italian public administration and public-service operators, a self-declaration (autocertificazione) usually replaces the certificate.
- It contains, in summary, the essential facts of the event (place and date).
- It is issued by stato civile, not by the residence registry.
- On its own it does not replace an extract or a full copy, if the body asks for more information, the spouses in full or the annotations.
What is the estratto per riassunto dell’atto di matrimonio
The estratto per riassunto dell’atto di matrimonio is another type of document. ANPR describes it as follows: extracts, like certificates, prove place and date of the event, but report a larger number of facts. The summary extract summarises the full civil-status act: it is not a full reproduction of the act; it is an official synopsis.
In practice, a summary extract may include details the simple certificate does not, such as particulars of the spouses, the rite (civil or concordat, if annotated) or later annotations (dissolution, divorce, widowhood, corrections). The exact content depends on the record, the Comune and the form used.
A request for an extract must always be reasoned. The office assesses whether the reason relates to a personal and concrete interest. A generic reason can lead to refusal. Through ANPR, when the act is available in digital form, the application is sent to the Comune that formed the act: issue is not immediate.
What is the copia integrale dell’atto di matrimonio
The copia integrale dell’atto di matrimonio — in ANPR also estratto per copia integrale — is the copy of the act itself, with all its components and all annotations added to it. It is not “another name” for the certificate, nor the automatic equivalent of the summary extract.
It is requested when the procedure needs the full text of the act and the margin notes: transcriptions, corrections, changes of civil status, mentions useful to reconstruct a family line. Many citizenship by descent files, estates or corrections ask for precisely this level of detail — but it is not a universal rule: the receiving body decides.
As with the summary extract, the request must be reasoned and the Comune assesses the interest. There may be access limits linked to privacy. Do not assume that anyone can obtain it for anyone.
A full copy and a summary extract do not replace each other. One reproduces the act; the other summarises it.
What is the estratto plurilingue
The estratto per riassunto dell’atto di matrimonio on a multilingual form is an extract completed on a conventional template, usually that of the CIEC Vienna Convention of 8 September 1976. It reports the data in several languages (including Italian, French, German, English and others provided for by the form), so that a foreign authority can read the fields without an ad hoc translation.
It can make it easier or, in some States party to the Convention, avoid a translation. It does not always remove the need to translate: acceptance depends on the country, the body and the procedure. A State not party to the Convention, or an office that expressly asks for a sworn translation, may still require one.
The multilingual extract is not a full copy. It is, as a rule, a summary extract in multilingual form. If you need every annotation on the act, the multilingual form may not be enough.

Comparison table
| Document | What it is | Information | When it may help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificato di matrimonio | Civil-status attestation of the event | In summary, place and date of the marriage | When the body asks for essential proof of the event, within the limits provided |
| Estratto per riassunto | Official synopsis of the full act | More data from the act, with any annotations summarised | When you need more than the certificate, but not necessarily the full copy |
| Copia integrale | Copy of the act with all its components | Full text and annotations added | When the procedure requires the complete content of the act |
| Estratto plurilingue | Summary extract on a multilingual form | The same data as the extract, in more languages of the template | Use abroad, if the recipient accepts the conventional form |
Does the marriage certificate belong to Anagrafe or Stato Civile?
Marriage is a Stato Civile act. Certificate, extract and full copy of a marriage come from the civil-status office (or the connected system, ANSC/ANPR).
Anagrafe is a different field: it certifies residence, household, citizenship for registry purposes. There is also an anagraphic marriage certificate, based on registry data: it is not the civil-status act. If an authority asks for the extract or the copy of the act, do not order an anagraphic certificate “because it contains the word marriage”.
Stato libero (absence of registered marriage ties in the registry) is an anagraphic certificate, not a substitute for the marriage act. For residence, household and ANPR see the guide to registry certificates. For birth formats, the twin guide is certificate, extract or full copy of a birth record.
Marriage celebrated in Italy and transcribed marriage
If the marriage was celebrated in Italy, the act is as a rule formed in the Comune of the ceremony (civil or, where provided, concordat) and remains in that Comune’s civil status, unless later transcribed elsewhere.
If the marriage was celebrated abroad, Italian documentation exists only if the act has been transcribed (or otherwise registered) in the competent Italian civil status. It is not true that every foreign marriage automatically “becomes” an Italian act. Without transcription, the Italian Comune may have nothing to issue.
A civil union is a distinct institution from marriage: ANPR lists it among digital civil-status events, but it is not the subject of this guide. If you have been asked for a civil-union act, do not assume it matches a marriage act.
Which one do I need?
No Italian marriage document is valid for every procedure. Before you apply, it is worth checking:
- Which body will receive the document.
- For which procedure it will be used.
- In which country it will be presented.
- Which name the authority uses (certificate, extract, full copy, multilingual).
- Whether you need annotations or the full text of the act.
- Whether the marriage was celebrated in Italy or must be transcribed from a foreign act.
- Whether you need a recent document (ANPR generally indicates 6 months’ validity for civil-status certificates and extracts).
- Whether you need the multilingual form.
- Whether you need a translation.
- Whether you need an apostille or legalisation.
Practical examples: a foreign municipality may accept the multilingual extract; a consulate may ask for the full copy with annotations; a private employer may be satisfied with the certificate. The same couple, for two different files, may need two different acts.
Example 1 — Italian citizenship
In an Italian citizenship by descent file, the ancestor’s marriage act — or yours, if it must be transcribed — depends on the requirements of the authority handling the case. Some offices ask for the extract, others for the full copy, others for a multilingual form. A foreign marriage not transcribed in Italy is a frequent cause of delay. There is no single “marriage act for citizenship”.
For the documentary picture of descent — without replacing legal advice — the guide on Italian citizenship iure sanguinis remains the reference.
Example 2 — Filing in another country
If the Italian act must be presented abroad (visa, residence, family reunion, recognition of a marriage), check the accepted format, the language, sworn translation and apostille or legalisation. A multilingual extract may suffice in a CIEC Convention country and not suffice in another. The guide to apostille and the Hague Convention explains when the apostille comes in, without repeating the whole procedure here.
Example 3 — I do not know which document to ask for
If you do not know whether you need a certificate, extract, full copy or multilingual form, the first step is to ask the recipient for the Italian name of the act. Then you can start the request at the competent Comune or, for digital acts, through ANPR.
If you need help obtaining Italian civil-status certificates — extracts, full copies, multilingual certificates and other registry acts — ItaloDocs can handle the documentary management. The documents are always issued by the public office, not by a private agency.
Are “marriage certificate” and “atto di matrimonio” the same thing?
In everyday speech people use “certificate”, “act” and “extract” as if they coincided. In Italian legal language the atto di matrimonio is the registration in civil status; the certificate, the extract and the copy are forms of issue of that act. They are not absolute equivalents: a “marriage certificate” requested by a foreign body may correspond, in Italy, to an extract or to a full copy.
Can I request the document online?
The method depends on the type of act, the Comune and whether the act was formed digitally. From 31 March 2026, with digital identity (SPID, CIE or CNS), ANPR lets you request civil-status certificates (immediate download, if the act is digital) and extracts (application to the Comune that formed the act, with reasons) for birth, marriage and civil union. Not every act — especially historical or not yet digital ones — is available online.
Anyone without SPID, living abroad or needing an old act still uses the municipal counter, the post or a delegate. If you need support, ItaloDocs can handle the request for an Italian marriage certificate: extracts, full copies and multilingual forms, as the case requires. If your Comune has a verified sheet, start from Comuni.
Do I need to translate the marriage certificate?
If you present it in Italy to someone who reads Italian, translation usually does not come into play. If you present it outside Italy, a translation may be required depending on country, body, procedure and accepted language.
A simple translation, a certified translation (wording used in other legal systems) and a sworn translation (in Italy, asseverata before a court) are not the same. Not every marriage act needs a sworn translation. The recipient decides. ItaloDocs offers only sworn translation, not simple translations or certified translations of other legal systems. If you already have the document and need it translated, the sworn translation of a marriage act form is the entry point on the general service. The overall picture is in the guide on when a sworn translation is needed.
Do I need an apostille?
Apostille or legalisation depends on the destination country, the type of act, the receiving body and the applicable rules (1961 Hague Convention or consular channel). It is not true that every Italian marriage certificate must always be apostilled.
The chain is often: original act → any apostille/legalisation → any translation. For the details, the apostille and legalisation page, the article on apostille and the Hague Convention and, on the order between document, apostille and translation, what is the correct order?.
How to request an Italian marriage certificate
- Identify the exact type of document (certificate, extract, full copy, multilingual).
- Find the Comune that formed or transcribed the act (as a rule the Comune of the ceremony or of the transcription).
- Check whether a foreign marriage has already been transcribed in Italy.
- Check the recipient’s requirements: name, annotations, issue date, language.
- File the request (ANPR if the act is digital; otherwise counter, post or power of attorney).
- Consider translation, if the document leaves Italy.
- Consider apostille or legalisation, if the destination country requires it.
- Deliver the act to the receiving body within the stated validity period.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a marriage certificate and a marriage extract?
The certificate attests in summary the place and date of the event. The summary extract summarises the full act and may contain more information and annotations. They are not the same document.
What is the full copy of the marriage act?
It is the copy of the act with all its components and annotations. It is not automatically the same as the summary extract or the certificate.
What is a multilingual extract?
It is a summary extract on a multilingual form (usually the CIEC Vienna Convention 1976). It can make use abroad easier, but it does not always remove the need for a translation.
Which one do I need for Italian citizenship?
It depends on the requirements of the authority handling the file. There is no single marriage act valid for every citizenship file. A foreign marriage that has not been transcribed can stall the file even if you already have the birth records.
Can I request an Italian marriage certificate online?
Sometimes, through ANPR, if the act was formed digitally and you have a digital identity. Historical or non-digital acts remain with the Comune. Not every document is requested online.
Is the anagraphic marriage certificate enough?
No, if the body asks for the extract or the copy of the civil-status act. The anagraphic certificate is based on registry data; it does not replace the act.
Do I need to translate the marriage certificate?
Only if the recipient, the country or the procedure require it. Not every marriage act needs a sworn translation.
Do I need to apostille an Italian marriage certificate?
Not always. Apostille or legalisation depend on the destination country and the use of the document.
Can I request someone else’s marriage certificate?
It depends on the type of act and the office’s rules. On ANPR, civil-status certificates and extracts are as a rule requested for yourself or for a minor child in the same household at the same address. In other cases the Comune assesses interest, a power of attorney and privacy rules.
Can ItaloDocs request my Italian marriage certificate?
We can assist you with managing the request for an Italian marriage certificate. Issue remains with the competent public office. For a quote, fill in the form.
Conclusion
“Italian marriage certificate” is a generic formula. Behind it sit certificate, summary extract, full copy and multilingual extract, with different contents. Before you request it, it is worth knowing who will receive it, for what purpose, and whether the act already exists in Italian civil status.
