Marriage celebrated abroad: transcription in Italy, Apostille and translation
For the marriage to count in Italy the foreign act must be transcribed. Comune or Consulate, Apostille or legalisation, translation.

A marriage celebrated abroad is not automatically an Italian record. MAECI explains that, to have effect in Italy, it must be transcribed at the competent Comune. This guide brings together the two most common questions — “do I need the foreign certificate” and “how do I have it transcribed” — because in practice they are the same aim: getting the event into the Italian registers.
Two routes: Consulate or Comune
According to MAECI, the original record issued by the foreign civil-status authority, duly legalised and translated, can be lodged with the diplomatic-consular mission, which forwards it to Italy. Alternatively you can file the same legalised and translated record *directly with your Italian Comune** (of residence or, for people registered with AIRE, the Comune of registration). Comuni* such as Milan confirm the same pattern.
Foreign document, Apostille, exceptions
| Situation | Typical formality | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Hague Convention country | Apostille from the competent authority of the country of celebration | Translation into Italian, unless an accepted multilingual form is used |
| Non-Hague country | Italian consular legalisation, according to local instructions | Translation into Italian in an accepted form |
| CIEC extract / multilingual form | Often exempt from legalisation within the convention’s scope | A translation may not be needed if the form is accepted |
| EU documents covered by Regulation 2016/1191 | No Apostille if the Regulation applies | Multilingual form or a translation, if the authority still asks for one |
Which paper
Not every foreign “marriage certificate” is the right record for transcription. Some offices ask for the full act, a certified copy, or even the licence. Check with the Comune or Consulate before you apostille and translate.
If there is a previous divorce, it may have to be transcribed first: foreign divorce judgment. Name mismatches: guide.
This is not the Italian marriage certificate
After transcription, Italy can issue an Italian certificate, extract or full copy. That is an Italian record, with different Apostille rules if you use it abroad. The distinction is in Italian marriage certificate. This page is about the foreign piece you need in order to transcribe.
Translation
Milan notes that, to have effect in Italy, legalised foreign records must be translated into Italian, except those on multilingual forms provided for by conventions. In Italy the form most often used for conformity is a sworn translation. Some consular posts abroad accept local translations under their own rules: that is not the ItaloDocs service.
If instead you are marrying in Italy as a foreign national, the topic is different: nulla osta and documents.

Frequently asked questions
Can I transcribe without an Apostille if we married in the EU?
If the record falls under Regulation 2016/1191, that Regulation does not require an Apostille. The Comune may still ask for a translation or a form. Confirm with the office.
Is a marriage licence also required?
Some consular districts ask for it. It is not a worldwide rule. Ask the office that will receive the file.
