Venezuelan documents for Italy: Apostille and sworn translation
You already have a Venezuelan public act to use in Italy: what an Apostille is, in which order to obtain it, and what is translated. The Apostille is obtained from the competent Venezuelan authority.
October 20, 2026 · 4 min
A Venezuelan public document destined for an Italian authority does not, as a rule, travel as-is. Venezuela and Italy both appear in the HCCH status table for the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961; the usual formality is an Apostille. Translation into Italian is a separate step. This page explains the order and what is translated — not how to obtain the act in Venezuela.
The service
Once the document is already issued and, where it applies, already apostilled, we can prepare a sworn translation in Italy. The Venezuelan Apostille is obtained through the SLAE or from the competent authority in Venezuela.
What an Apostille is
An Apostille is the Convention certificate: it attests the authenticity of the signature, the capacity of the signatory and, where relevant, the identity of the seal (article 5). It does not certify that the civil-status or criminal data are “true”. It is not a translation. It does not restart the issue date of the underlying act.
The MPPRE recalls that, unless exemptions apply, a Venezuelan public document is legalised or apostilled to be used abroad. The Convention overview is in Apostille and the Hague Convention. Here the document starts in Venezuela.
When it may be required
When a public act issued in Venezuela must be produced in Italy and no exemption applies (for example an accepted multilingual form). Not every sheet in a file is a public document. Not every addressee asks for the same coverage. What counts is the instruction of whoever receives the file today.
Usual order: document → Apostille → translation
The Italian Foreign Ministry states that foreign acts for use in Italy are, as a rule, legalised or given an Apostille and, save conventional exceptions, translated into Italian. Where translation is done in Italy, a cautious order is:
- the act already issued by the Venezuelan authority (the specimen you will file);
- an Apostille on that specimen, in Venezuela, if the formality applies;
- translation of that set — including the Apostille certificate if the addressee wants the whole file translated.
Translating first and apostilling afterwards often leaves out sheets or files added later — the work is redone. The generic sequence is in document, Apostille and sworn translation.
| Item | Prior formality | Translation | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civil-status partida or certificate | Apostille in Venezuela if it is a public act and Italy asks for it | Into Italian, of the complete specimen | Annotations and the reverse are part of the act |
| Criminal record | Apostille (including an electronic one, if that is what was issued) | Into Italian; validity of the certificate is a separate clock | See Venezuelan criminal-record certificate |
| The Apostille itself | — | If the addressee wants the whole file translated | There is no automatic always/never rule |
Is the Apostille translated too?
The Apostille follows a conventional model, often in Spanish. The Italian addressee may want the whole set translated or may accept the act alone. There is no single formula. For a quote, ItaloDocs needs the complete document you intend to use.
Paper, files and e-Apostilles
Venezuela takes part in the electronic programme (e-APP). From 11 June 2025 the HCCH notified an extension of e-Apostilles to many SAREN categories, with verification via QR or portal. That does not mean any PDF is suitable for swearing in Italy. Detail: digital Venezuelan documents.
The Italian Consulate General in Caracas also describes a translation route in Venezuela. That is an admissible mode, not the only one. People already in Italy often use swearing before an Italian authority. That is what ItaloDocs offers.
When the document is ready
Once you already have the Venezuelan document prepared, you can send it to ItaloDocs for sworn translation into Italian. Send the complete specimen, including the Apostille if it is already attached.
Frequently asked questions
Does ItaloDocs issue Apostilles in Venezuela?
The Apostille is issued by the competent Venezuelan authority. Once it is affixed, we can prepare the sworn translation into Italian.
Must every Venezuelan document be apostilled?
No. It depends on the type of act, the addressee and any exemptions.
Does an Apostille expire?
The Apostille itself does not expire. The criminal-record certificate may, however, have a validity period from the date of issue (for example six months, according to the Italian instructions). The MPPRE distinguishes these two points.
Can I translate in Italy an act that is already apostilled?
Yes — the typical case for someone already living in Italy.
Must QR codes and verification pages be translated?
If they form part of the specimen to be filed, include them in the file you send us: digital documents.
