Venezuelan documents for Italian citizenship by marriage: what to translate into Italian
Partidas, criminal records and other Venezuelan acts you already hold for an art. 5 application: Apostille, sworn translation and countries of residence.
October 20, 2026 · 7 min
If you are preparing an application for Italian citizenship by marriage (article 5 of Law no. 91 of 5 February 1992) and some of the paperwork is Venezuelan, this guide sets out which foreign records may belong in the file, which formalities may apply, and what must be translated into Italian — once you already hold the documents.
It does not assess whether the application is admissible, does not calculate residence periods and does not replace the Prefettura instructions updated on 18 July 2025 or notices on the ALI portal. Applications from the United Kingdom follow a consular route of their own: citizenship by marriage from the UK.
The service
ItaloDocs is a private service specialised in sworn translations. If you already hold the Venezuelan file — including papers from more than one country — we can prepare the sworn translation into Italian. Requesting the records, the Apostille in Venezuela and filing the application remain official channels.
Marriage (art. 5) is not residence (art. 9)
Ministerial instructions distinguish conferral by marriage or civil union (art. 5) from the grant by residence (art. 9). The two lists of attachments are not the same. For filings in Italy, see application, documents and residences. This page is the Venezuelan part of that file.
Which Venezuelan documents may belong
The 18 July 2025 instructions ask, among other items, for a full birth extract (unless the birth was in Italy), duly translated and legalised/apostilled, and a criminal-record certificate of the country of origin, with the same formality. If the marriage was celebrated abroad, a foreign marriage certificate legalised/apostilled and sworn in translation may be required, or a consular statement of concordance where surnames changed or details diverge — to be uploaded with the birth record, according to that text.
In Venezuela these acts are usually called partida de nacimiento, acta or partida de matrimonio and certificación de antecedentes penales. Local names do not replace what the Prefettura or the portal asks for today. How a partida is presented (sheets, annotations, reverse) is below; Apostille then translation is in Venezuelan documents, Apostille and translation.
| Document | Typical role in the file | Formalities for Italy |
|---|---|---|
| Birth partida | Origin record; particulars for the form | Complete document (sides and annotations) + Apostille in Venezuela + translation |
| Marriage partida / acta | If the marriage is foreign or annotations / concordance are needed | The same path on the full record, if the office asks for it |
| Venezuelan criminal record | Certificate of the country of origin, if origin is Venezuela | Apostille (including electronic, if that is what was issued) + translation of the certificate |
| Other acts (powers of attorney, judgments, discrepancies) | Only if the receiving authority asks for them | Assessed on the actual record — no “just in case” lists |
Birth, marriage, annotations and the reverse
A Venezuelan partida is not always a single side. Marginal notes, stamps, signatures, a printed reverse and, if already attached, the Apostille or linked electronic file may all appear. A quote needs the complete document you intend to use in Italy, not a crop. Translating only the first page can omit the very data the addressee reads.
The translation is faithful: it does not align a second surname, a date or a place “as on the passport”. If records diverge, see name and date discrepancies.
Apostille and translation are separate steps
Venezuela and Italy appear in the HCCH status table for the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961. For a Venezuelan public document destined for an Italian authority, the usual formality is an Apostille issued in Venezuela — not by ItaloDocs. An Apostille does not translate the contents: it certifies the signature, the capacity of the signatory and, where relevant, the seal (article 5).
The Italian Foreign Ministry recalls that foreign public documents, to be used in Italy, are as a rule legalised or given an Apostille and — except for multilingual forms — translated into Italian. Where translation is done in Italy, a cautious order is: document already issued → Apostille on the copy to be filed → translation of that copy. Detail: Apostille and translation of Venezuelan documents. Electronic files: digital Venezuelan documents.
A Venezuelan criminal record does not exhaust the certificates asked for
Being born in Venezuela does not exhaust the certificates asked for. National instructions speak of the certificate of the country of origin. Form A (December 2025) states that the criminal-record field must also include a third country where the stay exceeded six months. The Prefettura of Rome, on marriage, spells out third countries of residence. Another Prefettura, or a consular post, may draw the list differently.
Someone born in Venezuela, who lived in Spain, then in the United States and now lives in Italy may need to consider more than one certificate. That is not an automatic “one country = one PDF”. The guide is foreign criminal records for citizenship by marriage. The Venezuelan record: Venezuelan criminal-record translation (that page remains centred on residence, art. 9: it explains the Venezuelan certificate; it is not the document list for an art. 5 application).
Swearing in Italy
ItaloDocs offers sworn translation only (in Italy, traduzione asseverata). The translator attests correspondence with the source, under the rules of the court registry or notary used. It is not “certified translation” as used in other systems. It does not authenticate the signature on the original — that, among Contracting Parties, is the Apostille’s role. Overview: when a sworn translation is needed.
What to check before translating
- Already hold the Venezuelan acts (and any other countries’ criminal records) the procedure asks for.
- Each document is complete: sides, annotations, Apostille or electronic file.
- Do not “correct” names and dates in translation.
- Complete the Apostille in Venezuela before the final translation in Italy, where that formality applies.
- Re-read the instructions of the competent Prefettura or consular post, not a blog summary.

Frequently asked questions
Does ItaloDocs request my documents in Venezuela?
The service starts once you already hold the document. We can review the file and prepare the sworn translation into Italian. The partida, criminal record and Venezuelan Apostille are requested from the competent authority in Venezuela.
Must the Apostille be translated too?
It depends on what the receiving authority asks. If the copy you upload includes the Apostille, the translation may have to cover it. For a quote, send the complete document.
Is a Venezuelan criminal-record certificate enough?
Only if the competent authority does not ask for other countries. Origin, citizenships and residences can widen the list. See criminal records from every country.
Can I send *partidas* and criminal records together?
Yes. One quote on the visible file avoids documents translated twice or forgotten.
Does this page replace the ALI instructions?
No. The portal and your Prefettura or consulate govern. Common documentary mistakes: errors in documents and translations for citizenship by marriage.
