October 20, 2026 · 3 min

A Mexican acta de nacimiento for use in Italy can appear in different forms: digital certification, certified copy, Civil Registry extract, and — in some Italian instructions — copia fiel del libro. This guide explains the differences without saying that one form applies to every Prefettura, Comune or Consulate.

The service

Once you have the acta in the form required by your recipient, we can prepare the sworn translation into Italian. The record and the Apostille are obtained from the competent Mexican authorities.

Who issues the act

The acta de nacimiento is an act of the Mexican Registro Civil (state / local, with digital federal certifications depending on the channel). It is not an Italian document and is not interchangeable with an ANPR extract. For use in Italy the citizenship instructions ask, for people born abroad, an extract complete as to identity particulars, translated and legalised/apostilled. Which Mexican support meets that wording must be checked case by case.

Copia fiel del libro: when it appears

Copia fiel del libro (a true copy from the Civil Registry book, often denser in annotations than a short certification) appears in instructions of some Italian posts in Mexico, especially on civil status, births and transcriptions handled by the Embassy of Italy in Mexico City and the Consulates. It is a requirement of that district / that type of procedure, not a universal rule to copy onto every Prefettura application in Italy.

Do not claim “Italy always requires copia fiel del libro”. It is needed when the competent Italian authority asks for it. A digital acta or an ordinary certification may suffice if the recipient accepts them.

Apostille

Mexico and Italy are parties to the Hague Convention. Apostille on Mexican public documents is obtained from designated authorities, with the federal circuit described by SEGOB — Apostilla y Legalización and, for state acts, the authorities of the issuing state. The acta and the Apostille are obtained from those Mexican authorities.

Translation

For use in Italy: Italian translation of the complete specimen (annexes, reverse, Apostille if already attached). ItaloDocs performs sworn translation. MAECI concerns other circuits. Once you have the acta in the form required for your procedure, send it in full.

Frequently asked questions

What is a *copia fiel del libro*?

A true copy from the Civil Registry book, often denser than a short certification. It appears in some Italian instructions in Mexico; it is not automatic for every Prefettura.

Does a digital *acta* work?

It may if the Italian recipient accepts it. It does not by itself replace a copia fiel when that is expressly requested.

Is Apostille needed?

As a rule yes, for a Mexican public act destined for Italy, unless the recipient says otherwise.

Is the Apostille translated?

Often yes, if it is part of the specimen. Assessed on the file: translating the Apostille.

Does ItaloDocs request the Mexican *acta*?

The service starts once you already hold the required document: we can prepare the sworn translation into Italian.
