Mexican documents for Italian citizenship by marriage: what to translate into Italian
Mexican birth, criminal records and civil status you already hold for art. 5: Apostille, sworn translation and other countries of residence.
October 20, 2026 · 3 min
If you are preparing an Italian citizenship by marriage application (art. 5 of Law 91/1992) and part of the documentation is Mexican, this guide sets out which Mexican acts may enter the file and what must be translated into Italian — once you already hold them.
This is a documentary guide, not a guide to legal eligibility. It does not calculate residence periods and does not replace the 18 July 2025 instructions or the ALI portal.
The service
If you already hold the Mexican file — including documents from several countries — ItaloDocs can prepare the sworn translation. Requesting the records and the Apostille in Mexico remain with the issuing authorities.
Which Mexican records may enter
The ministerial instructions ask, among other things, for a birth extract complete as to particulars (unless you were born in Italy) and the criminal-record certificate of the country of origin, both translated and legalised/apostilled. If the marriage is foreign, a marriage certificate may be needed. Mexican civil status enters when the post asks — not by habit.
| Document | Typical role | Formalities for Italy |
|---|---|---|
| Acta de nacimiento | Origin record; form (digital, certificada, copia fiel) according to the instruction | Apostille + translation of the complete record. Detail: Mexican birth |
| Constancia de Antecedentes Penales Federales | Origin criminal record, if origin is Mexico | SEGOB Apostille + translation. Detail: Mexico criminal records |
| Civil status (marriage, annotations, dissolution) | Only if the receiving office asks | Apostille and translation of the complete record, if requested |
| Other countries of residence | Beyond Mexico, if the office asks for other countries | Read with that office’s instructions: foreign criminal records |
Apostille and translation
Mexico and Italy are in the Hague Convention. You obtain the Apostille yourself on the SEGOB circuit or from the competent state authority. Then, for Italy, direct translation into Italian in sworn form. Do not reverse the order if the Apostille must form part of the complete document.
- Filing in Italy: documents and residences.
- Typical file errors: errors in documents and translations.
- If you also have US documents: US documents.
Several countries, one quote
Anyone born in Mexico who has lived in the United States and now resides in Italy may need to join several certificates. It is not automatic. The reference guide remains foreign criminal records.
Already have the Mexican acts (and, where they apply, the Apostilles)? Send them in full for a sworn-translation quote. If you have documents from several countries, send them together.
Frequently asked questions
Does this page say whether I am entitled to citizenship?
No. It says which Mexican acts may enter and what is translated.
Do I always need *copia fiel del libro*?
Only if the competent authority asks. Detail: acta de nacimiento.
Does ItaloDocs obtain *actas* in Mexico?
The service starts once you already hold the document. We can review the file and prepare the sworn translation into Italian. The record is requested from the competent Mexican authority.
Can I send Mexico and the US together?
Yes. One quote; formalities remain those of each country.
Is the Mexican Apostille translated?
Often yes, if it is part of the complete document. Assessed on the file.
