Foreign documents for family reunification in Italy: legalisation and translation
Documents only: marriage, birth, kinship. How foreign civil-status acts are legalised and translated — not a residence-permit guide.

In family reunification (ricongiungimento familiare) the Italian authorities ask you to prove the relationship: marriage, birth, parentage, sometimes dependency. Those records, if they were drawn up abroad, arrive with legalisation and translation rules. This page stops there.
Documents only
ItaloDocs is a private service specialising in documents and sworn translations. If you already have the civil-status records and you have been asked for Italian, we can prepare the translation. The nulla osta and the family-reunification application are filed with the Sportello Unico, Questura or Consulate, according to the procedure.
Which foreign records usually appear
- marriage record or certificate;
- the family member’s birth record;
- proof of kinship or of household composition;
- a divorce judgment or death record, if a previous relationship has to be clarified.
Polizia di Stato documentation on residence titles for family members indicates certificates from the authority of the country of origin or provenance translated and legalised by the Italian Representation in the country where the record was drawn up, or bearing an Apostille if the State is party to the Hague Convention.
Prefectural offices, such as Trapani, repeat that, once the nulla osta has been obtained, the certification of kinship, marriage and minority, duly translated and legalised, is presented to the Italian diplomatic-consular authority in the country of origin at the time of the visa. That is a document step, not a residence-permit handbook.
| Origin of the record | Usual formality (police/prefecture sources) |
|---|---|
| Hague Convention State | Apostille from the competent territorial authority |
| Other State | Legalisation by the Italian Representation in the country where the record was drawn up |
| Record already in Italian, or an accepted multilingual form | A translation may not be needed: the office says so, not this page |
Translation
If the record is not in Italian (and is not an accepted multilingual form), a translation is needed. In Italy, when conformity is required: sworn translation. Some consulates abroad have their own conformity rules: we do not sell those.
- Marriage to transcribe: transcription
- Foreign divorce: judgment
- EU: Regulation 2016/1191 if the record and the recipient fall within it

Frequently asked questions
Does ItaloDocs file family reunification?
No.
Is a multilingual extract enough without a translation?
Sometimes, if the office accepts it. It is not automatic for every Sportello Unico or Consulate.
